Important News of the Day
1. Congress member P J Kurien was unanimously elected deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha.
2. Public sector bank staff will go on strike on Wednesday and Thursday to protest a proposed amendment to the banking law expected to be tabled in the Lok Sabha.
3. The government will amend the Constitution to restore reservation in promotions for dalits, with the entire political class backing the move.
4. First Delhi Intl Film Festival in December, will be headed by Dada Sahib Phalke awardee Malayalam filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan.
5. Air India’s post-merger losses, from 2007-08 to 2011-12, are over Rs 28,000 crore.
6. Retail inflation eases to 9.86% in July.
